Situation Report: Expanding War in Sudan Threatens Civilians

The Satellite Sentinel Project has secured independent evidence of the Sudanese government’s large-scale ongoing offensive against the Sudan Revolutionary Front, or SRF. DigitalGlobe analysts’ review of troop disposition over key garrisons across Sudan confirms the Sudan Armed Forces, or SAF, have forward deployed across the country and are positioned for attack. On November 17, 2013, DigitalGlobe satellites confirmed fighting in the Abu Zabad area. Ground sources report that Abu Zabad’s proximity to a major east-west railway line makes it a strategic juncture for supply lines. This satellite imagery shows clear evidence of destruction from active hostilities and craters from aerial bombardment in the town.

New DigitalGlobe satellite imagery and analysis confirms the military buildup and the destructive impact of a large-scale Sudan Armed Forces, or SAF, offensive against the Sudan Revolutionary Front, or SRF. Satellite imagery of the strategically important West Kordofan town of Abu Zabad confirms its aerial bombardment and provides a snapshot of the hostilities. In late October 2013, the Satellite Sentinel Project issued a human security warning based on increased activity at Sudanese military installations.

Human Security Warning: Sudan Army Poised for Offensive in South Kordofan or Abyei

The Satellite Sentinel Project is issuing a human security warning for civilians living in Buram, Tess, and other areas to the south of Kadugli in Sudan’s South Kordofan state. Re-positioned aerial assets also place the highly contested Abyei area within range of the Sudanese army's arsenal.

Correction: An earlier version of this report attributed aircraft participating in a UNISFA troop rotation at Kadugli Air Base to the Sudan Armed Forces. Since the signature visual identifiers of SAF helicopters match those of United Nations aircraft, imagery analysts find it difficult to distinguish between the two.
